1335MABINI proudly presents a curated exhibition by Kiri Dalena, titled There is Another Sky, featuring works by Kiri and Aba Dalena, Aubrey Llamas, Jose Olarte, Jippy Pascua, Jeffrie Po, John Torres, Mordz Visitacion, and Lina Zacher.
Kiri Dalena’s practice as a filmmaker and visual artist is intrinsically connected with her uncompromising commitment towards advocacies that uphold civil liberties, especially of the marginalized. This inexorable sense of duty stems from Dalena’s profound engagement with the communities with whom these collective efforts identify with. Though the artist renders her individual being – her name, her face, her existence – in service of the oppressed, Dalena shares this fundamental accord with numerous artist-activists.
Primarily featuring selected works in video and photography, the roster of visual artists, filmmakers, and photographers focus their lens on the current plight of the lumad – the indigenous people of Mindanao, which is the Southern part of the Philippine archipelago choked with conflict. More than a dozen local ethnic groups have long been asserting their right to autonomy consistent with their distinctive cultures, amidst the erosion of their traditions and ancestral domain due to various religious, political, and economic factors. There is Another Sky is representative of this unyielding movement that galvanize the masses against the dictates of a few.
